Objectives: To investigate a possible relationship between single nucleotide polymorphism of human IL-6 promoter -572 locus and BMDs of distal radius and distal calcaneous of Korean menopausal women.
Methods: We examined BMDs of 234 postmenopausal Korean women(by DEXA) and extracted DNAs from peripheral blood samples. Polymerase chain reaction was used to detect IL-6 gene polymorphism.
Results: The mean age, height, weight and BMI of patients were respectively 50.8¡¾7.9years, 153.3¡¾5.0cm, 57.8¡¾7.3kg and 23.9¡¾2.8kg/m2. The genotype distribution was as follows; GG genotype, 119(50.9%) women; GC genotype, 103(44.0%) women; CC genotype, 12(5.1%) women. BMDs of distal radius in genotype GG, GC, CC were 1.03¡¾0.17g/cm2, 1.04¡¾0.18g/cm2, 1.00¡¾0.17g/cm2, respectively. They were not significantly different(p>0.05). BMDs of distal calcaneus were -0.84¡¾1.40g/cm2, -0.70¡¾1.43g/cm2, -0.96¡¾1.66g/cm2, respectively. There was no statistical significance in BMD in each genotypes(p>0.05).
Conclusion: We concluded that IL-6 -572 SNP didn¡¯t have an association with BMD of postmenopausal Korean women. IL-6 promoter -572 SNP would not be a single genetic factor of postmenopausal osteoporosis.
